Server administration. What is it and why should you use it?

Have you ever come across the phrase “server administration” on the internet? If yes, have you wondered what it actually is and how it can benefit you and your business? The article covers all this and much more. We encourage you to read it.

The world is constantly changing. New technologies are emerging all the time to make our lives easier. New opportunities also mean new professions and new jobs, especially for IT specialists. I don’t know if you will agree with me, but nowadays the work of an IT specialist in a sense begins to resemble that of a doctor. At a certain stage of the career the amount of information that you need to learn becomes so vast that in order to maintain a high level of expertise you need to specialise in one particular field. This is why we have front-end and back-end specialists, specialists in Java and many other languages. One of the things you can specialise in is also administration. An administrator is responsible for the efficiency and security of the servers. Unfortunately, companies can rarely afford to hire administrators due to financial constraints. However, there is a solution to this problem. If you want to save money and at the same time increase the security of your server, you can use the Qlos server administration service. Have we drawn your attention yet?

Why do you need server administration?

The internet and the computerisation of virtually every aspect of our lives is forcing companies to use IT professionals. If you run an online business you know that if you don’t have the skills yourself, it is a necessity. The most common solution, especially in companies not dealing with IT, is to hire a single person with a huge range of responsibilities to handle. He/she takes care of hardware, software, servers, data security, mail, website and many, many other areas, depending on the employer’s needs. Unfortunately, such a solution often results in that a person with little competence in a given field simultaneously looks after e.g. the development of our website and the security of our servers, both of which are crucial for the efficiency of your business. A website error is not necessarily costly, but server unavailability or possible data loss is something else entirely when it comes to possible consequences. A single crash or hack can lead to huge losses. Consequently, it’s a good idea to be able to rely on a professional who won’t let this happen. Depending on the chosen package and the needs of our Clients, as part of the Qlos server administration service we offer the following:

  • server installation & configuration and ensuring server efficiency
  • optimisation of processes related to the operation of servers
  • monitoring of server performance
  • software updates
  • creation of backup policy and backup copies
  • logs’ analysis
  • development plans and consultations

Why should you take an interest in this topic?

The most important reason is that you will save money. Why employ a dedicated employee when you can buy a subscription/package for which you will pay many times less? According to data from wynagrodzenia.pl (march 2021), server administrators earn 7910 PLN gross on average per month. In comparison, Qlos offers the Pro-active package starting from 800 PLN net per month. The fact that this solution is the most cost-effective is quite clear.

Efficiency. Although watching over server security is a constant task, an administrator’s job often involves reacting to an event (e.g. a crash or a hacking attack). If you do not need to make frequent changes to the server and you know that you have up-to-date server software, maintaining such a job position would come down to paying someone to be on standby and wait for a possible failure. This is why it is much more efficient to hire a dedicated company that will act only when it is needed, i.e. in emergency cases.

Accessibility. A dedicated employee usually works specific hours during which they are available, e.g. from 8 AM to 4 PM, and after they are unreachable. Unfortunately, neither hackers nor crashes care about office hours. If a failure or attack (often invisible to an untrained user) occurs outside of office hours, it will not be detected in time, which can be disastrous. At Qlos, we monitor your server 24 hours a day. Once a threat is identified, our administrators will respond to it even on Christmas Day in the middle of the night.

Experience. As an old saying goes, “We know ourselves only as far as we’ve been tested”. And conversely, how are you supposed to know about something if you haven’t come into contact with it? Even if you read about something, but you don’t test it in practice, you can’t be sure that you will be able to handle it. In order to stay up-to-date, you need to be in constant contact with a given subject. Taking care of many servers and the associated constant readiness and vigilance allow us to constantly improve our procedures and gain the necessary knowledge. With hackers using more and more sophisticated attack methods, without sufficient experience you cannot hope to intervene quickly and effectively.

Specialisation. As we described earlier, it is extremely difficult to have extensive knowledge in every field. There are exceptions, yes, but they only confirm the general rule. Specialisation allows you to broaden your knowledge on a given subject and gives you the opportunity to delve into detailed aspects. Often, it is these details that determine whether a complex problem regarding server operation can be resolved. Remember that often each and every second that your service is unavailable means bleeding money.

Still not convinced?

We are aware that outsourcing such an important and sensitive task as server administration may be stressful at first. A common argument is that someone fears entrusting a task such as this to a third party. However, outsourcing IT (and other) services is nothing new. For example, you do not need to put a lawyer on the payroll to take advantage of his or her services. It is the same with server administration. Outsourcing server administration is becoming more and more common even for the largest companies, with giants such as BMW, Samsung, General Electric and even NASA storing their data on Amazon’s servers.
